Our expert jury has once again selected its 5 finalists from the submitted projects and you have voted!
The Public Voting winner is HelioRec with over 50%. The Public Voting will count with one vote in the final vote.
The result of the Public Voting:
HelioRec: 50.4% Eranova: 30.8% Pick a Pier: 10.6% Reef Life Foundation: 6.7% Ocean Energy: 1.4%
Now, the jury appoints the „ocean tribute“ Award winner, the Public Voting counts in!
The 'ocean tribute' award and the prize money of 20.000 € will be awarded during the blue motion night at boot Düsseldorf 2022.
Look at the alphabetically listed projects and inform yourself about the special goals and ideas of the marine protection organisations. In January the winner will be announced and will receive € 20,000 to support his project!
Project summary: We remove the gmacro green algae polluting beach to transform into a biobased newgeneration of polymer to substitute to fossil based material. We want to increase our level of bio content up to 70% we are currently at 50%. Our product have been tested and qulified by industries but we want to go further do new test on other type of seaweed like sargassium.
If we win: we will do more research and improve our biobased content.
Project summary: Eco-friendly electrical charging stations (ECSs) for the maritime sector based on floating solar power plant. Floating solar power plant will supply clean electricity to ECS. The main goals of the project are to save the land space in a port area, generate a clean source of energy, charge electrical vehicles (EVs) and electrical boats (EBs) with ECSs and implement novel digital services for data prediction and optimization. Number of unique concepts are represented in the project - Offshore floating system for solar panels, installation on the sea; - Fast-charging stations for EVs and EBs in the port; - ML for data measurement, prediction and optimization; - Circular economy approach (using recycled plastic and second life batteries).
If we win: will we use the prize for technology development and pre-commercialization process.
Project summary: Ocean Energy is developing a wave energy conversion technology. This environmentally benign technology involves simple shipyard construction. The Ocean Energy Buoy is designed to convert wave energy into electricity, fresh water or hydrogen. The technology is based on the oscillating water column principle where the wave pressures drive air through a turbine to generate electricity. This device has been tested at 1/3 scale in open sea in Ireland and is now under test at large scale (500kW) at the US Navy Test Site in Hawaii. On completion of these tests this device will proceed towards commercial roll-out for application worldwide using the technology concepts originating in Ireland. The device is easy to maintain as there is only one moving part - the turbine rotor and this is located above the waterline. The large flotation tanks in the device make is suitable for adding desalination, electricity storage and hydrogen production onboard. The technology is suitable for all scales but initially the small island and isolated communities market will be the target where diesel generation is currently used.
If we win: we would use the prize money for the promotion of this renewable energy technology for applications in offshore islands and small isolated communities.
Project summary: Pick a Pier was founded in 2017 to make sailing more accessible, convenient and sustainable. Our platform optimizes marina operations and enables them to get more out of their resources, reducing demand for new marina construction and protecting the environment. We have partnered with organizations representing hundreds of marinas to promote environmental standards and sustainable sailing practices. The Pick a Pier platform provides boaters with best practices and practical tools, and allows us to measure the economic value of adopting sustainable practices. The platform digitizes the mostly analog interaction between boaters and marinas, doing for recreational boating what AirBnB and Booking.com have done for the hospitality industry: It optimizes the offering and creates new opportunities. Pick a Pier now connects thousands of boaters and dozens of marinas on a digital platform that elevates the boating industry to a more efficient, profitable and environmentally friendly standard.
If we win: The prize money will go toward expanding the platform, with the goal of having 100,000 boaters on the platform by the end of 2022 and promoting sustainable sailing everywhere.
Project summary: Reef Life builds custom nanotech coral reefs that enhance biodiversity, coral growth, and fish populations to provide food and economic security. There are currently miles of dying coral reefs surrounding Sint Maarten after Hurricane Irma's 185+ winds caused widespread physical destruction and left toxic debris and pollution in the ocean. It will take 100's of years for these reefs to naturally re-grow without our help. Within months, our nanotech coral gardens provide critical homes for biodiverse marine plants and animals, supporting increased fish aggregation and natural coral settlement. The Nature Foundation has issued us a permit for additional deployment of large coral restoration gardens made from IntelliReefs' Oceanite nanotech substrate. Reef Life continues to work with The Nature Foundation to expand IntelliReefs in the Marine Protected Area and other dive locations to enhance coastal resilience and job security on Sint Maarten, which is largely tourism based. Long-term goals include using IntelliReefs world-wide to assist coral restoration & encouraging ocean conservation through collaboration & community education.
If we win: we would use the prize money to deploy a large nanotech reef in Sint Maarten to rebuild damaged reefs following severe hurricane & climate damage.
